The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has called for jobs and livelihoods to be at the heart of the development agenda after the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) passes in 2015.
Poverty, unemployment and inequality contribute to most of the social challenges we face globally. There will be nearly 75 million unemployed youth aged 15 to 24 in 2012, a crisis that will only be beaten if job creation for young people becomes a key priority in policy-making.
Sport alone cannot provide the solution to poverty, unemployment and inequality; but can as one of the pillars of society make a contribution. This includes encouraging young people we work with in our programmes to set life goals and value education, and making our young sports coaches/leaders beneficiaries of our programmes by investing in their future employment prospects.
Coaching for Hope is using an ICES systems development grant from UK Sport to address the employability by supporting the organisational development of our community based partner organisations and by making our coach education curriculum relevant to the needs of community coaches.
They are currently working with seven community based organisations to integrate ICES, governance and safeguarding children standards into a tool to support and monitor organisational development. The intention being to develop progress targets for on-going coach development and management with each organisation’s development strategy.
They are also revising their coach education offering to align with ICES and the new South African Coaching Framework which in turn is aligned to the South African Qualifications Framework. The hope being that training provided by Coaching for Hope can in the future provide recognised unit standard credits that link to other regional accredited training programmes and football federation qualifications.
