Norman Brook speaks at Stellenbosch University Sports Performance Institute


Norman Brook visited the Stellenbosch University last week to give a presentation at the new Sports Peformance Institute.  His talk titled “Creating a High Performance Environment for Athletes” was delivered to some thirty coaches and sports science/medicine practioners based at the institute.

Stellenbosch University is world-renowned for its achievements in the sporting sphere, having produced some of South Africa’s finest sportsmen and women over the years. Over 150 rugby Springbok rugby players, a number of famous national cricketer, numerous world class athletes and a hockey team that currently boasts 11 players in the South African women’s team.

The university recently made a strategic decision to build on its sporting legacy by establishing the Sports Perfromance Institute. The institute’s purpose is to establish Stellenbosch University as a world class training, research and education destination.

Kelly Fairweather, the former IOC Director of Sport, has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Stellenbosch University Sports Performance Institute and will be leading its future development.


Stellenbosch University has recently twinned with Loughborough University, regarded by many as the UK’s leading university for sport. Loughborough University Director of Athletics, George Gandy, visiting Stellenbosch with a group of university athletes for pre-season training attended Brook’s presentation.

Brook emphasised the importance of leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of sporting excellence relating to his own experiences in athletics and triathlon. He also provided detail of UK Sport’s world class performance programme and praised the development of Mission 2012 as a tool to keep sports on a path of continuous improvement.
